Are there more areas of study to think about? Should LXDs go to graduate schools to do this or is there a better path through experiences?

Not school but they should keep up with uptodate theories and tools even by reading and self practice or by professional study at any school
So the mandatory is keep knowledgeable and up to date because it is a great high flow industry

I can imagine LXDs being included in related under- and graduate level studies. Instructional design through project implementation could be incorporated in a variety of ways, and as individual or team assignments.
