NOFOMO…Learning experience design professionals will have a significant presence in the metaverse.
As Learning Experience Designers we will need to be aware of the incredible opportunities before us of creating and designing in virtual spaces too. The metaverse opens up limitless opportunities for learning design professionals.
Good points in the post and I welcome the enthusiasm @Roxann but I must admit my hesitation in jumping into this platform. I love the cool factor yet wonder if existing resources, tools, and design frameworks might serve and support people just as well.
Thanks Bill,
I appreciate your view. The metaverse learning ecosystem is in it’s infancy and like anything else will need to have many learning designers decide if it is a space and place they want to explore and design in. Most definitely, learning designers need to be invested in designing for the learner first in any learning environment. Learning experience design pioneers are already designing the metaverse in many business industries and healthcare. I’ve designed in social VR and it is very challenging from a design perspective and pedagogically. I find it to be an exciting time for exploring the challenges of learning design in the metaverse.
If there is an opportunity to explore the metaverse, I would highly recommend it. Learning Designers yes, should be excited about the incredible future opportunities of beta designing, creating, and piloting new learning experiences. The metaverse is a space and place where everyone is welcome- that’s how I am experiencing it right now.
Having worked in 2nd Life I do understand the possibilities and hope we can create experiences that impact the communities we serve and support.
Roxann, I agree that we must keep our learners at the center of design, development and ultimately their learning experience…regardless of tools, platforms, etc. Leading a team of instructional designers, I believe, must include encouraging openness to this new frontier, as well as opportunities to learn and “grow with” the myriad aspects of bringing elements of virtual reality into common business learning.
I have a subset of instructional designers from my team who have either a curiosity or expressed interested in learning to develop high impact, immersive learning experiences. They are at the front edge as we learn, explore, keep a pulse on, and “try on” new tools and processes as we go. Fun times!
